Coping with Sensory Processing Disorder

November 7, 2007 |

Welcome back!

How would it feel if someone gently brushed up against you at school and yet it felt like he had just punched you? How would you react?

My guest this week is Dr. Jennifer Brout of Positive Solutions of New York and she describes many examples of children being overstimulated by sounds or sights that the average student would not even acknowledge. The problem for these children then becomes the inability to calm themselves after being overstimulated, thus very often leading to classroom disturbances.

Dr. Brout is a psychologist with a passion for educating people about Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and for funding research to discover how exactly this disorder can successfully be treated. Currently, SPD is not recognized as a valid disorder by the medical field and very little research has been done.

Join us this week as we learn what SPD is, how difficult it is for children to live and cope with the condition and why teachers and school administrators need to educate themselves about the disorder before just dismissing a struggling child as a “bad kid.”
